We all have images in our minds of what flowers look like. And over the course of a lifetime we have likely seen thousands. The colors, the petals, and the patterns may change but they all convey images in our imaginations. Recently I ran two workshops at different facilities for individuals with memory care. No two paintings were the same and in fact the results were remarkable. At the onset of one, an aid shook her head indicating that one man had extreme dementia. However, he seamlessly painted a scene of two tall flowers in a sunny field. One woman stared at the paper for ten minutes without moving and then proceeded to paint a complex Hawaiian flower that most would have trouble envisioning. Paintings styles ranged widely from detailed and flowing to graphic and impressionistic. Despite dementia, we all have images of flowers embedded in our memories. Allowing these images to emerge is wondrous and up lifting. In both workshops, the participants, staff and I were awed and excited by the results and I look forward to seeing many more flowers bloom in future workshops.
